RSS News Feed: Updates Brought to You
Navigating the virtual pathways of the blogosphere may be old hat to you, but if you’re relatively new to blogging or find yourself returning to your bookmarks tabs more frequently than is healthy, consider using the RSS news feed.
“RSS? What’s that? Russian Sandwich Society?” No, Really Simple Syndication. And it really is simple — simple to set up and it brings more efficiency to your web wanderings by notifying you when your favorite blogs and websites have been updated.
To get started all you have to do is download a Reader or desktop application like Google Reader. Then look for the RSS subscription button on the blog you want to subscribe to. On my blog, it is on the right-hand column, called “Entries RSS” (If you get really addicted you can subscribe to “Comments RSS”). Follow whatever directions appear and voila! You will be notified when the blog is updated.
So instead of checking your professor’s blog, your friend’s art blog and your neighbor’s cousin’s blog each day, you’ll check your Reader to see if those blogs have been updated, saving you time and effort. Let’s face it, between your two email accounts, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts, you’ve got a lot of things to check — let RSS simplify things for you.
